Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026, the fourth model in its Claude 5 family to ship in under two months, following Sonnet 5, Fable 5, and Mythos 5 in June. Only a Haiku 5 upgrade remains outstanding. The pace itself is a story: what used to be a once- or twice-a-year flagship launch cadence across the industry has compressed into something closer to a rolling release schedule, with each new model justified less by a single breakthrough than by steady, compounding gains in capability, cost, and speed.
Opus 5 lands at the exact same price as its predecessor, Opus 4.8: $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, with a faster mode available at double the base cost that runs roughly 2.5 times quicker. It keeps the 1-million-token context window and 128,000-token maximum output that Anthropic has offered on recent Opus releases, and it ships with extended thinking switched on by default. It is now the default model on Claude Max and the strongest option available on Claude Pro.
On raw capability, Anthropic is claiming Opus 5 roughly doubles Opus 4.8’s score on Frontier-Bench v0.1, and — more pointedly — that it comes within half a percentage point of Fable 5, Anthropic’s own more expensive top-tier model, on CursorBench 3.2, while costing half as much per task. On OSWorld 2.0, a benchmark for computer-use tasks, Opus 5 reportedly beats Fable 5’s best result at roughly a third of the cost. Anthropic also cites a threefold lead over the next-best model on ARC-AGI 3 and about 1.5 times the next competitor’s pass rate on Zapier’s AutomationBench, a workflow-automation benchmark. The one place Opus 5 concedes ground is cybersecurity and exploit-development tasks, where Mythos 5 — Anthropic’s specialized top-end model — still leads.
The practical upshot is a familiar one in this market: Anthropic is positioning Opus 5 as the model most developers should actually build on, reserving Fable 5 for the narrow slice of tasks where its extra capability is worth the extra price. Anthropic has leaned into that framing directly, saying Opus 5 is tuned to verify its own work and iterate carefully until it succeeds — the company’s own example being a computer-vision pipeline the model built correctly from a prompt that left out real detail, catching and correcting its own gaps along the way rather than shipping a plausible-looking but broken first draft.

Anthropic also says its safety classifiers now trigger 85 percent less often on Opus 5 than they did on Fable 5, while cybersecurity guardrails — blocking vulnerability scanning of compiled binaries while still permitting ordinary source-code analysis — remain in place. Notably, Opus 5 does not carry the 30-day data retention policy that applies to Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
The release also lands against a backdrop worth naming plainly: Anthropic is reportedly preparing for an IPO later this year, and a flagship model that undercuts its own top-tier product on price while beating it on several benchmarks is not a subtle move. It reads as a company demonstrating that its mid-tier product line can absorb frontier-level workloads at commodity pricing — exactly the kind of efficiency story that plays well with public-market investors weighing whether AI margins can actually hold up once the initial pricing land-grab settles down.
