BYD — already the world’s largest EV maker by volume and, by direct extension, one of the most consequential brands in the Philippine EV market — has filed seven patents around what the industry has long called the “holy grail” of battery technology: solid-state batteries. BYD’s specific approach uses what the company describes as a “double electrolyte” design, combining a fast-but-unstable ion conductor with a slow-but-stable one to try to get the energy-transfer speed of the first with the safety and longevity of the second. The company says the design is meaningfully easier to manufacture at scale than earlier solid-state prototypes have proven to be — historically the single biggest reason solid-state batteries have stayed a research-lab promise rather than a shipping product for over a decade of industry hype.

The Numbers BYD Is Claiming

BYD’s stated performance targets are genuinely significant if they hold up outside a lab: driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, achieved at a lighter weight than the company’s current Blade 2.0 battery — itself already over 600 kilograms in its existing form — along with higher energy density and, notably, lower fire risk than today’s liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion packs. That last point matters as much as the range figure: solid electrolytes physically can’t leak or ignite the way liquid ones can under damage or thermal runaway, which is the core safety argument for solid-state technology across the entire industry, not just BYD’s specific design. The company’s stated timeline has small-scale trials beginning in 2027, including road testing with camouflaged prototype vehicles — real, physical testing rather than lab-bench cell testing alone, though still a meaningful distance from mass production.

BYD Isn’t Alone — Chery Is Racing on a Similar Timeline

BYD isn’t the only Chinese manufacturer chasing this specific milestone. Chery’s luxury Exeed sub-brand is reportedly planning to launch the ES8 shooting brake with a solid-state battery offering its own 1,000-kilometer range claim as early as late 2026 — meaningfully sooner than BYD’s own 2027 trial timeline, if Chery’s schedule holds. That head-to-head timing is worth watching specifically because Chery already has real, direct Philippine market presence — its Tiggo rEV plug-in hybrid recently crossed 1,000 units sold locally — meaning a genuine solid-state breakthrough from either manufacturer could reach Philippine consideration on a meaningfully faster timeline than most Western manufacturers’ own solid-state roadmaps, which generally stretch toward 2028-2030.

Why the World’s Biggest Battery Maker Is Skeptical

Not every major industry player is convinced the timeline is real. CATL — the world’s largest battery manufacturer by volume, and a supplier whose cells or licensed technology underpin a large share of the global EV industry regardless of which car brand’s nameplate is on the vehicle — has publicly stated that mass-market solid-state adoption remains “years away,” a notably more cautious framing than BYD’s own 2027 trial announcement. General Motors has gone further, describing itself as highly skeptical of the technology entirely and not actively pursuing it as a near-term strategy. That range of reactions — from BYD’s aggressive 2027 timeline, to Chery’s even more aggressive late-2026 target, to CATL’s caution, to GM’s outright skepticism — is a useful reminder that “solid-state batteries are coming soon” has been an industry talking point for years without yet producing a real mass-market vehicle, and this round of announcements, however specific and patent-backed, should be read with real skepticism about timing until an actual production vehicle exists.

What This Means for Philippine Founders

If BYD’s or Chery’s solid-state timelines hold even approximately — and both companies already have meaningful, growing Philippine distribution and dealer networks in place — Philippine consumers could realistically see genuinely next-generation EV range and safety characteristics arrive faster than they would through Western manufacturers’ more conservative roadmaps, simply because the companies leading this specific race already sell directly into this market. For Philippine EV-adjacent founders, the more actionable takeaway isn’t about the vehicles themselves but about planning horizons: any business built around current-generation battery limitations — range-anxiety-driven products, current-generation charging cadence assumptions, battery degradation or resale-value models — should treat 2027-2028 as a real inflection point worth planning around, not a distant hypothetical, given how directly BYD’s and Chery’s own claimed timelines intersect with brands already actively selling in the Philippines today.
