Toyota Recalls 10,000 C-HR EVs Over a Braking Software Bug That Can Cut Power Mid-Drive

Toyota has issued a safety recall covering roughly 10,000 model-year 2026 C-HR electric vehicles in North America over a software defect in the car’s regenerative braking system. Under certain conditions — specifically when the battery is already fully charged or holding a high charge level — the regenerative braking system can push additional charge into a battery that has no more room to take it, overcharging the pack. When that happens, the C-HR’s electric drive system can shut down mid-drive, causing the vehicle to lose power while the car is still moving.

The fix itself is straightforward: Toyota technicians will update the battery’s electronic control unit software at no cost to owners. Toyota plans to send formal notification letters to affected owners in early November, though the company has already confirmed the issue publicly and is directing owners to check eligibility through its dealer network or its Brand Engagement Center in the meantime. As of this reporting, the recall had not yet been fully published on the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s own site, which is typical for a recall in its earliest disclosure window — the manufacturer’s own announcement typically lands a few days ahead of the formal federal filing being searchable.

It’s the company’s newest and most aggressively specced EV, with 338 horsepower, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, a 74.7-kilowatt-hour battery good for roughly 270 to 290 miles of range depending on trim, and Toyota’s first standard adoption of the North American Charging Standard plug — positioning it as Toyota’s genuine entry point into a battery-electric lineup the company has approached far more cautiously than rivals like Hyundai, Kia, or the Chinese EV makers it now competes with globally. A defect surfacing this early in a flagship new model’s life is a reminder that even an automaker with Toyota’s decades of manufacturing discipline is still working through the software-reliability learning curve that pure EV makers have already been through several times over.

Toyota’s Bigger Bet Is Still Unfolding

This recall lands in the middle of a year Toyota has framed as pivotal for its EV strategy — the company has targeted roughly 1.5 million annual battery-electric sales alongside a slate of ten new EV models, while continuing to hedge with hybrids and plug-in hybrids rather than committing fully to an all-electric lineup the way some competitors have. A software recall on a brand-new flagship model, however contained and however quickly resolved, is the kind of early friction that tests whether that hedged, multi-pathway strategy is actually paying off in build quality, or whether Toyota’s late entry into serious EV competition is showing up in exactly the software maturity gaps critics predicted.

There’s also a market-timing signal here. As global automakers push EVs into more markets, including Southeast Asia, a visible recall from a trusted brand like Toyota is unlikely to meaningfully slow EV adoption in the Philippines on its own — but it does reinforce that Filipino buyers and fleet operators evaluating an EV purchase should weight a manufacturer’s software-update track record as heavily as its battery warranty, since the two are now functionally inseparable. Toyota’s decision to disclose the defect and offer a free remote or dealer software fix well before any reported injury, rather than waiting for a field incident to force its hand, is also worth noting on its own terms — it’s the kind of proactive disclosure that regulators and buyers alike increasingly expect from any company shipping software-defined hardware, a bar Philippine mobility and hardware startups will eventually be held to as well.
