About Andreessen Horowitz (a16z)

Andreessen Horowitz, widely known by its shorthand a16z, is a venture capital firm founded on July 6, 2009 by Marc Andreessen (co-creator of the Mosaic and Netscape web browsers) and Ben Horowitz, both veterans of the enterprise software company Loudcloud/Opsware. Headquartered in Menlo Park, California, the firm has grown into one of the largest venture capital franchises in the world, reporting roughly $90 billion in assets under management as of early 2026 spread across a family of specialized funds covering traditional venture and growth investing as well as dedicated crypto, biotech, gaming, and American dynamism/defense-focused vehicles.

The firm has backed a remarkable number of category-defining technology companies since its founding, including early or growth-stage investments in Airbnb, Coinbase, Stripe, GitHub (later acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion), Lyft, Figma, Roblox, and Twitter/X, alongside a fast-growing roster of defense-technology companies such as Anduril, Shield AI, Skydio, and Astranis. a16z is known for its large in-house team of operating partners, marketing, and policy staff supporting portfolio companies well beyond capital alone.

Investment Thesis

Andreessen Horowitz invests across the full company lifecycle, from early-stage seed and Series A rounds through large growth-stage financings, rather than concentrating on one stage. Its sector coverage is unusually broad for a single firm, spanning enterprise software and cloud/SaaS, consumer internet, fintech, healthcare, gaming, education, robotics, energy, cryptocurrency/Web3, artificial intelligence, and — through its American Dynamism practice — defense and national-security technology. While overwhelmingly US-based in its investment activity and headquartered in Silicon Valley, the firm has also backed prominent international companies such as France's Mistral AI.
